Developer Toby Fox follows up his 2015 critically acclaimed and fan-favorite 2D RPG Undertale with deltarune chapter 1 in 2018, This was the first chapter in what we later learned was a five-chapter top-down RPG with puzzles, bullet hell sequences, and Final Fantasy-inspired combat, and Chapter 1 was released for free. Fox postpones Chapter 2 to 2021 in a surprise announcementAnd now, players are patiently waiting for the release of Chapter 3. Today, more than two years later, Fox has revealed an updated plan for its Deltarune release strategy.
With Chapter 3 nearing completion, Fox plans to finish Chapter 4 and release Deltarune as a purchasable product. And after that, development on Chapter 5 will continue and it will be hit when the game is ready. To help with this, Fox has hired a producer “whose entire job will be to speed up overall game development for future chapters,” according to a new statement Issued.
You can read Fox’s full statement below:
“So, now that Chapter 3 is nearing completion… I think it’s a good time to again discuss how we will release Deltarune for purchase. My original plan was to release Chapters 3, 4, and 5 as a single. However, the finale Chapter 5 is still a long way off the line…and I don’t think anyone really wants to wait that long to release anything. Especially me.
So, no more waiting for New Tactics: Chapter 5. Instead, we’re going to focus on making Deltarune available for purchase after we finish Chapter 4. This should make everything a little more fair! There’s already been a fair amount of cutscenes and enemy work done on Chapter 4. Additionally, I’ve hired a new producer whose sole job will be to speed up overall game development for future chapters. Therefore, I feel very optimistic about the next steps of this project.
That being said though, I think I’m going to pause on more detailed development updates for now. Instead, I’ll just let you guys know if development is nearing completion, or if something strange happens.”
Elsewhere in the update, Fox says that Chapter 3 took a lot of trial and error to figure out how it would work, but with Chapter 4, “I already feel very confident about how we Can progress.” He also noted that people on the team are already coming back to work on Chapter 4 and that everyone is excited to work on that part of Deltarune.
